By the Numbers
In fiscal year 2011, researchers and clinicians throughout five U.Va. schools reported 141 inventions to the Patent Foundation. Despite the tumultuous economy, the Patent Foundation advanced many of these inventions to industry through 58 deals with companies and other institutions, bringing the discoveries a large step closer to the marketplace. Additionally, a record-shattering 37 U.S. patents were issued to U.Va. inventors.
Leading the way in invention disclosures this year was the U.Va. School of Medicine with 86.5* (61.3%*) disclosures, followed by the School of Engineering and Applied Science with 34.0 (24.1%), the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences with 14.5 (10.3%), and the Curry School of Education and School of Architecture each with 1.0 (0.7%). An additional 4.0 (2.8%) inventions were reported by the Medical Center.
