Daniel J. O’Connell, M.B.A., is a co-founder and managing general partner of NeuroVentures, a specialty venture capital fund established in 2001 to invest in emerging biotechnology and medical technology companies seeking to develop novel treatments for diseases and disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). During his tenure with NeuroVentures, O’Connell has reviewed thousands of early-stage CNS-related opportunities, funded 15 companies and participated in rounds valued in excess of $600 million. He represents NeuroVentures on the boards of Acumen Pharmaceuticals Inc., Kadmus Pharmaceuticals Inc., NanoMed Systems Inc. and previously Setagon Inc. In addition, he serves as a board observer at BrainCells Inc., Concentric Medical Inc., NeurAxon Inc. and previously Saegis Pharmaceuticals Inc. (prior to its sale to Lundbeck A/S) and Cyberkinetics Inc. O’Connell currently serves as a business advisor to the Epilepsy Therapy Project and the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation. He is a director of the Neurotechnology Industry Organization, a non-profit trade association that represents a broad spectrum of companies involved in neurotechnology (drugs, devices and diagnostics), neuroscience research centers and brain disease advocacy groups across the U.S. and world.
O’Connell’s experience with start-up health care companies includes co-founding MedSpecialists Inc., a venture-backed clinical applications provider acquired by ProVation Medical Inc., and Surgical Solutions LLC, a company which developed and marketed patented neurosurgical products licensed from leading research institutions. Prior to attending business school, O’Connell worked in investment banking at Advest Inc. (Boston, Mass.). He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia (1999) and a B.A. from Brown University (1992).
