Ph.D., Cancer Cell Biology

Mikael C. Herlevsen, Ph.D., joined the Patent Foundation in April 2007. He has broad and varied experience in biological research and primarily evaluates patentability and marketability of technologies in the areas of immunology, cell biology, biotechnology and cancer research. A native of Sweden, Herlevsen obtained his master's degree in biological sciences from the University of Lund, Sweden. The degree included foreign studies through an Erasmus Scholarship at the University of Manchester, England, as well as an internship at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. After completing his studies in Lund, Herlevsen returned to Heidelberg, where he completed his doctoral degree at the German Cancer Research Center. Directly after completing his graduate studies in 2001, Herlevsen joined the lab of Dan Theodorescu, M.D., Ph.D., at the University of Virginia, where he studied the tumor suppressor PTEN as well as the cellular mechanism of intrinsic drug resistance in tumor cells.
