Miette H. Michie
Certified Licensing Professional
M.S., Molecular/Cellular Biology; B.F.A.
Miette H. Michie has been an employee of the Patent Foundation since November 1999. She has primarily focused on biotechnology and biomedical inventions. Prior to working with the Patent Foundation, Michie served for five years as a research specialist in the laboratory of Fabio Cominelli, M.D., Ph.D., both at the University of Southern California and at the University of Virginia. During this time, her work focused on the molecular implications of inflammatory bowel disease — the roles of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, in particular. Michie has co-authored numerous published abstracts and co-authored a paper entitled "IL-18, a Novel Immunoregulatory Cytokine, is Up-Regulated in Crohn's Disease: Expression and Localization in Intestinal Mucosal Cells," published in the Journal of Immunology in 1999.
Michie received a Master of Science in molecular/cellular biology in 1992 from the University of New Mexico. As a graduate student, she worked with biology professor Larry L. Barton, Ph.D., investigating toxic metal resistance in microorganisms, with an emphasis on the binding and reduction of chromium by bacteria found in soil. She continued her research in this area as a Fulbright fellow at the University of Ghent, Belgium.
