How Does Technology Transfer Work?

Every day, University of Virginia researchers make discoveries in the lab that have the potential to positively impact the world. They develop more-effective drug treatments, more-secure computer systems and eco-friendlier solutions to everyday living. But, clearly, the work does not stop at the bench.

Through technology transfer, the U.Va. Patent Foundation works to advance these research successes beyond the lab and into the global marketplace, where they can change lives. The Patent Foundation works with researchers to identify, protect and license their discoveries to industry members who are willing to bring these ideas from concept to "real-world" reality, in the form of a product or service.

By ensuring protection for these research discoveries and seeking pathways to the marketplace, the Patent Foundation serves as a valuable resource for U.Va.'s faculty, staff and student inventors, while also bringing new research dollars into the University and promoting local economic development.
